Beer is a drink loathed and loved by many. Those who do love beer always find ways to combine drinks and create drinking games. Savvy brewers have also created a few tips for storing beer at home when you need to keep it fresh and tasty for the next social event, or the next time a marathon of your favorite show comes on. Here are a few ways you can ensure your beer stays fresh at home.

Buy Canned or Dark Bottled Beer

When exposed to natural or artificial light, beer can “skunk.” Skunked beer has a poor smell and a terrible taste. Purchase canned beers or beers in dark bottles to decrease the risk of skunking. Dark bottles can block out over 90 percent of light while light-colored bottles aren’t made for blocking any light. Cans will preserve beer longer but once opened should be consumed within 24 hours for optimal enjoyment.

Buy Age-Worthy Beer for Storage

If you want to store beer for an extended period of time, make sure you purchase aging or cellaring beer. When beer can be stored for an extended period without losing its potency, it is considered age-worthy. Strong or sour beer can counteract the effect that oxygen has on weaker brews. Oxygen is vital to the brewing process, but once brewing is complete, it is detrimental to the taste. Strong beers usually have more alcohol by volume (ABV) which counteracts oxidation.

Store Beer in a Cool Area

Keeping beer cool is an important part of proper beer storage. Ideally, you want to keep beer at 50 degrees Fahrenheit. If you own an extra fridge for your beer, 50 degrees is an easy temperature to maintain. A dark, cool place is the best option if you don’t own a dedicated beer fridge. Avoid areas where the temperature fluctuates. It’s actually better to store beer in an area where it’s a constant 60 degrees than an area varying between 50 and 60 degrees, respectively. The way you store your beer has a huge impact on its taste and potency. Proper storage techniques can ensure other items stay in peak condition as well. After using these tips to store your beer at home, visit Treasure Island Storage to store other precious items.
