There is plenty to take into consideration when storing foods. People often have misconceptions as to where to store their food, which can lead to improperly stored goods going bad. There are four places to consider when thinking about food storage: the counter, the pantry, the refrigerator, and the freezer. Let’s see if you’ve been storing your food in the right place.

The Counter

Foods that you should store on the counter include:
  • Garlic
  • Shallots
  • Onions
  • Winter squash
  • Potatoes
  • Tomatoes
  • Citrus
  • Melons
  • Bananas
  • Bread
Storing these foods anywhere other than the counter can be harmful. If you put many of these foods in the refrigerator or freezer, their consistency may alter resulting in an unpleasant taste.

The Pantry

Foods that should end up in the pantry include:
  • Dry foods
  • Spices
  • Nuts
Air, humidity, heat, and light are horrible for spices. Whole spices last much longer than ground spices. Ideally, ground spices should be replaced every six months, while whole spices are supposed to last years.

The Refrigerator

Foods that you should store in the refrigerator include:
  • Dairy products
  • Meat
  • Pies
  • Herbs
  • Yeast
  • Eggs
  • Vegetables
  • Cheese
Things that are usually not refrigerated like lemons and limes should go into the refrigerator after having been cut up. The tricky thing about the refrigerator is that not all parts are created equal; some parts are cold while other parts are warm. How you store items in the fridge can affect how long they last.Changing where something is positioned in the refrigerator can be the difference between the product being kept well or freezing over oddly. Something to keep in mind is that you should not place certain food items next to each other. For example, if you put vegetables next to ethylene-producing fruits, the vegetables will decompose quicker. Some of these ethylene producing fruits include stone fruits, passion fruit, mangoes, kiwis, and apples.

The Freezer

Food that you should put in the freezer include:
  • Fish
  • Meat
  • Cake
  • Pies
  • Pie crust
  • Citrus zest
  • Coffee
The amount of time you should keep fish and meat products in the freezer depends on the product. For example, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) recommends that you store lamb and beef for no longer than six months. You can also keep fish for up to six months, but fattier fish must not remain stored for any more than three months. The USDA also recommends a storage time of up to four months for poultry, veal, and pork.
