Storage reality shows have taken over the airwaves in the last 5 years almost as much as those chronicling the day-to-day adventures of working in a pawn shop. These shows have captivated the eyes and minds of many viewers and have led many to pick up a new hobby or pay closer attention to making payments on their personal storage units. For those of you who have heard people talk about them but never really understood what was going on, we’ve highlighted the top three storage reality shows.
This was the first of them all. Storage Wars was the first introduction Americans had to what goes on when a storage unit is abandoned and goes up for auction. The show follows a group of individuals as they travel to various cities, placing competitive bids on storage units of generally unknown contents. What keeps viewers hooked and bidders coming back for more is the possibility of a huge payoff.
Bidders are unable to step foot in the storage unit and only have a flashlight at their disposal. After they have taken a peek into the unit, they place their bids on each storage unit in an auction-style setting. At the very end of the show, individuals with the winning bids are granted access to claim their units. This is the fun part. They inspect the units and find out if they either made or lost money. The show was such a big hit that a few cast members were given their very own spin-off series.
Contrary to Storage Wars, Auction Hunters focuses on the duo Allen Haff and Clinton Jones as they hunt down storage units that have been put up for auction. These business partners travel around to various auctions with the hope of winning big. The show details how they inspect and analyze storage units without ever stepping inside of one. After deciding that they are going to bid on a unit, they set a bidding limit on how much they are willing to spend on the unit. This is one of the more entertaining segments of the show as viewers sit back and watch as they argue, disagree, win big, and lose big.
Storage Hunters is scripted on the same premise as the aforementioned storage reality shows but instead focuses on the husband and wife duo of Brandon and Lori Bernier. They have gained the reputation of being the “fiercest competitors” and use their guts and storage unit expertise to score big on abandoned storage units. The findings vary from valuable antiques to seemingly irrelevant household junk, but it’s the thrill of the chase that powers this couple as they travel the country targeting storage unit hotspots.
