What is St. Patrick’s Day And Why Do We Celebrate It?
The festival known as St. Patrick’s Day is held worldwide every March as a celebration of Irish religious culture. It’s a day when we remember St. Patrick, Ireland’s patron saint who in the 5th century ministered Christianity in Ireland. It’s believed that St Patrick died on March 17 in the year 493. Popular legend has it that St Patrick rid Ireland of snakes. Buried under Down Cathedral in Downpatrick, Ireland, the anniversary of St Patrick’s death became a feast day in the Catholic Church, and this festival is celebrated by Irish-American cities with distinctive events and activities. From Dublin to Amsterdam, from Boston to Chicago and New York, this has become one of the most highly-anticipated days of the year.
The first recorded St. Patrick’s Day parade wasn’t held in Ireland — but in New York City in 1762, 14 years before the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence. As the number of Irish immigrants coming to the U.S. increased in the mid-19th century, the March 17th celebration quickly became a widespread event and cause for annual celebrations.

2020 St. Patrick’s Day Parade
On March 17, the real fun begins, with the famed 2020 New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade along 5th Avenue. This massive all-encompassing parade is truly a beloved event — and for good reason. It’s often had an important symbolic value to current events.
In 2002, the NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade was dedicated to the “Heroes of 9/11,” honoring the police, fire, and other rescue workers from that tragic day. That year’s parade was the largest ever, attracting more than 300,000 marchers and three million spectators lining 5th Avenue. It was also the year when the President of Ireland Mary McAleese, participated as well. In 2011, the Parade celebrated its 250th anniversary.
